In that women’s prison, there were rules that no one officially explained to the new arrivals. Each woman had to discover them on her own, and sometimes learning just one of those rules could come at a very high price.The most feared and influential woman in the place was named Vanessa. She was enormous, had an aggressive temper, and had been terrorizing the entire cellblock for several years. She would take other inmates’ belongings without asking, force them to do her chores, and if anyone dared to protest, they quickly regretted it. Even many of the prison officers preferred to avoid any confrontation with her.
When a new inmate named Kate arrived at the prison, almost no one noticed her. The young woman silently completed all the intake procedures, received her uniform, bedding, and a pair of new white sneakers given to all new arrivals. She didn’t speak to anyone, obeyed every instruction, and tried not to draw attention to herself.
The next day, the inmates were taken to the courtyard to spend some time outdoors.
Kate stood by the fence, her head slightly tilted, when Vanessa suddenly noticed her shoes.
“Nice shoes,” she said with a mocking smile as she slowly approached. “Though I doubt you’ll need them. Take them off. They’re mine now.”
The courtyard immediately fell silent.
They all knew perfectly well what happened when Vanessa chose a new victim. Usually, no one dared to argue with her. The women silently handed over whatever she demanded, simply to avoid trouble.
But Kate didn’t move.
He looked calmly at the enormous woman and replied in a low voice:
-No.
A contemptuous smile appeared on Vanessa’s face.
