After Dad left for work, my stepmother took me to the room and whispered: “Don’t be afraid.”

Liam drove back to college through the cold Oregon rain, gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles turned white. The windshield wipers moved back and forth in a slow rhythm, but they couldn’t clear the storm raging inside his head.

He kept hearing Sophia’s voice.

“Don’t let people convince you that you’re broken just because you needed kindness.”

Those words stayed with him during the entire drive.

When he arrived at campus, everything felt the same — the noisy dorms, the crowded hallways, the fake laughter echoing through the building — yet Liam no longer felt like the same person who had left a week earlier.

But the rumors about Chloe still followed him.

The whispers started again the moment he walked into class.

“There he is…”

“Yo, careful around him…”

Laughter.

Muted, cruel laughter.

Liam clenched his jaw and kept walking, pretending not to hear any of it. But inside, every word cut deep.

That night, he sat alone in his dorm room staring at his phone. He had typed Sophia’s name into the message box at least twenty times, but deleted every message before sending it.

Finally, near midnight, his phone buzzed first.

Sophia:
Did you arrive safely?

His chest tightened instantly.

Liam stared at the screen before replying.

Yeah. I’m okay.

A few seconds passed.

I miss hearing your voice already, she sent.

Liam swallowed hard.

He shouldn’t have smiled.

But he did.

From that night on, they started texting almost every day.

At first it was innocent — asking if he had eaten, reminding him to sleep, checking on his classes. But slowly, the conversations became deeper.

More personal.

More dangerous.

Sophia told him about her loneliness. About how his father barely touched her anymore. How their marriage had become cold years ago.

Liam confessed things he had never told anyone.

How rejected he felt.

How ashamed he’d been after Chloe humiliated him.

How empty his life felt before Sophia started listening to him.

And every conversation pulled them closer.

One evening, weeks later, Liam received a call from his father.

“You’re coming home for Thanksgiving,” his father said firmly.

Liam hesitated.

“I don’t know if that’s a good idea.”

“That wasn’t a question.”

The line went dead.

The entire drive home, Liam’s stomach twisted with anxiety.

When he arrived, Sophia opened the door before he could knock.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

She looked beautiful.

Too beautiful.

Her soft sweater hugged her figure, and her loose hair fell over one shoulder. But it wasn’t just that. It was the way she looked at him — warmly, emotionally, almost desperately.

“You got taller,” she whispered with a nervous smile.

Liam laughed softly.
“That’s impossible. It’s been two months.”

Still smiling, she stepped aside to let him in.

Dinner that night was painfully tense. His father barely spoke, absorbed in work emails and phone calls like always. Meanwhile, Liam could feel Sophia’s presence every second — every glance, every accidental touch, every moment their eyes met across the table.

Later that night, Liam couldn’t sleep.

Around 1 AM, he went downstairs for water.

The kitchen light was already on.

Sophia stood by the counter wearing a silk robe, holding a mug of tea.

They froze when they saw each other.

“You can’t sleep either?” she asked quietly.

Liam shook his head.

For a few seconds, silence filled the room.

Then Sophia spoke again.

“Liam… we need to be careful.”

His heartbeat quickened.

“I know.”

But neither of them moved away.

Sophia looked down at her trembling hands.

“I tried to stop thinking about you,” she admitted softly. “God knows I tried.”

Liam stepped closer before he could stop himself.

“Sophia…”

She looked up at him slowly, her eyes glossy with emotion.

“You make me feel seen,” she whispered. “Do you understand how dangerous that is?”

The distance between them disappeared little by little.

Neither of them knew who moved first.

Maybe both did.

And then suddenly, her arms were around him.

Liam inhaled sharply as he held her against him, feeling her warmth, her heartbeat, the softness of her skin beneath the silk robe.

It wasn’t lust in that moment.

It was loneliness colliding with loneliness.

Years of silence.
