PART 1
“So you learn not to embarrass me in front of my family!” standard-issue jerk Adrian shouted before grabbing Maya by the hair and slamming her face directly into her own daughter’s birthday cake.
Forty-seven guests stood frozen in the garden of a rented estate in Cedar Glen. Some opened their mouths in sheer disbelief, while others lowered their gaze to the grass, but not a single person moved to step in.
Eleanor, Maya’s mother-in-law, smiled with cold approval as she crossed her arms.
“It was about time someone put her in her place,” Eleanor muttered under her breath.
A few meters away, Lauren, who was Adrian’s secret lover, pulled out her phone to record the entire scene.
Maya slowly sat up on the grass, wiping pink cream from her eyelashes, her hair, and her lips. Her daughter, Sophie, who had just turned four years old, was crying hysterically beside the smashed dessert table.
Adrian stood over her expecting a scream, a slap, or an explosive scene that would allow him to call her hysterical in front of everyone.
But Maya did not give him that satisfaction.
With her finger, she gathered a small, clean piece of frosting from her cheek and held it close to Sophie’s trembling mouth.
“It’s sweet, my love, so please don’t cry,” Maya whispered softly.
The little girl tasted the sweet frosting between her soft sobs while Maya picked her up, straightened her back, and walked into the house without saying another word.
The wooden front door closed softly behind them.
Ten seconds later, the background music started playing again across the lawn.
“Don’t pay any attention to her,” Adrian said with a loud laugh while grabbing a beer. “She always exaggerates everything.”
The guests pretended nothing had happened, and Eleanor began handing out the remaining untouched pieces of cake. Lauren reviewed the video on her phone screen and added a fast caption before posting it online: “When the drama queen of the family ruins the party.”
Nobody at the gathering noticed the tall man in the dark suit watching every movement from a quiet corner of the yard.
His name was Ethan Cole, the wealthy owner of a major investment firm with main offices based in Northcrest. He had arrived accompanied by his business partner Victor, who lived nearby and had invited him over to discuss an upcoming deal in an informal setting.
Ethan usually hated these noisy family parties, but ever since he entered the garden, he had watched Maya running around without stopping. She was carrying heavy trays, serving drinks, cleaning dirty plates, arranging foldable chairs, and attending to every guest without receiving a single word of thanks.
At first, Ethan genuinely thought she was just a hired domestic worker.
Then he saw little Sophie clinging tightly to her skirt, and he watched Maya stroke the child’s hair with a deep tenderness that could only come from a devoted mother.
He had also seen Adrian wrap his arm around Lauren’s waist right in front of Maya just an hour earlier.
Maya had glanced at them for barely a second without protesting or arguing, lowering her gaze like someone who had spent far too long learning to survive in complete silence.
Then came the terrible incident with the cake.
Ethan felt a surge of cold fury rise within him, directed not only at Adrian, but also at every single bystander who had watched and chosen to remain silent.
“Marcus,” Ethan said in a low voice to his assistant who was waiting by the garden gate, “find out everything you can about that woman.”
“Everything, sir?” Marcus asked for clarification.
“I want her real name, her family background, and her entire past, because I want to know why a woman with that kind of dignity lives surrounded by people who treat her like she is completely worthless,” Ethan instructed firmly.
As Ethan left the property, Lauren’s cruel video began spreading rapidly across video platforms.
Before midnight struck, the short video had already drawn hundreds of thousands of views.
Locked safely inside the upstairs bathroom, Maya wiped the very last traces of cream off her tired face. She then pulled a thin silver chain out from beneath her simple blouse, revealing an antique silver ring engraved with a delicate orchid.
She squeezed the metal ring tightly between her trembling fingers and made a promise to herself.
“Mom, I think I finally understand everything now,” she whispered into the dark room.
Nobody present at that disastrous party could have imagined what was about to happen next.
