He handed her the letter.

In twenty years of hospital work, Maria had seen Daniel deliver terrible news to families without losing his composure.
She had seen him work through mass-casualty events, infant emergencies, and nights when every bed was full.
She had never seen him cry.
Across the corridor, Lily stood in the doorway.
She had slipped away from the social worker.
Daniel looked up.
She stared at the letter in his hands.
“Did Mommy write that?”
“Yes.”
“Is she awake?”
“Not yet.”
Lily nodded as though she had expected that answer.
Then she noticed the photograph.
“That’s Mommy.”
“Yes.”
“Who’s the man?”
Daniel’s throat tightened.
“That’s me.”
Lily looked from the photograph to his face.
Her eyes narrowed in concentration.
“You knew my mommy?”
“I did.”
“Before me?”
“Yes.”
“Did you make her sad?”
The question struck harder than accusation.
“I don’t know,” Daniel said. “But someone made both of us believe things that weren’t true.”
Lily stepped closer.
“What does the letter say?”
Maria began to intervene.
Daniel stopped her gently.
He crouched so he was level with Lily.
“It says your mother was very brave.”
“She was sleeping.”
“She became very sick after the babies were born.”
“Is she going to wake up?”
“The doctors are trying to help her.”
Lily studied him.
“What else?”
Daniel looked at the letter.
Then at the seven-year-old child standing barefoot in his coat.
“It says I’m your father.”
Lily did not react immediately.
She glanced toward Maria, perhaps checking whether the adults had begun playing a strange game.
“I said I don’t have a daddy.”
“I know.”
“Mommy said my daddy didn’t know about me.”
“She was right.”
“Are you sure?”
Daniel unfolded the old photograph.
“I am sure we need a test before anyone makes legal decisions. But I knew your mother. And the dates match.”
Lily stared at him.
Then she asked the only question that mattered to her.
“Will you leave?”
“No.”
The answer came without hesitation.
She stepped forward and touched the silver name badge clipped to his shirt.
“Dr. Mercer.”
“Yes.”
“That’s the name on the paper?”
“Yes.”
Her fingers curled around the edge of the badge.
“Can you help my mommy?”
“I promise she will receive the best care possible.”
“That’s not what I asked.”
Daniel’s eyes filled again.
“I will stay.”
