I stepped back immediately. “Do not try to position yourself as the one in control right now.”
Brianna looked at him with tears in her eyes. “Were you ever planning to tell me the truth.”
He said nothing, and the silence answered her question.
She reached into her purse, took out a ring, and dropped it into his hand. “You used me,” she whispered.
I expected to feel some sense of victory, but instead I felt empty in a way that surprised me.
Ryan looked at me like he still expected me to fix this for him, like I had done so many times before during our eight years together. This time I did not move to help him.
I took out my phone, opened our banking app, and said clearly, “Before you get on any plane today you are going to transfer every dollar you took from our account.”
His expression hardened. “I cannot send all of it right now.”
I nodded slightly. “Then we involve airport security, report financial fraud, and I give my lawyer everything including these clinic records.” I leaned closer and added quietly, “When the clinic finds out you used marital funds without consent I doubt they will be happy about it.”
That finally changed his expression.
He pulled out his phone and started typing with stiff hands while Brianna watched in silence, her face now calm in a distant way. My phone buzzed once, then again, then again until the full amount was back in my account.
I checked the balance twice before I looked up. “Good,” I said.
Ryan looked at me like he still did not understand the situation. “So that is it.”
I almost laughed at how little he understood. “No,” I said, “that is just the money.”
He stared at me waiting for something more, maybe hoping I would soften or give him another chance to explain everything away. I did not give him that opportunity.
I slipped my wedding ring off my finger and placed it gently on top of his boarding pass.
“That,” I said calmly, “is it.”
Brianna looked at me and said softly, “I am sorry.”
“I know,” I replied, and for the first time I truly meant it.
Then I picked up my suitcase and walked away without looking back.
Three months later I filed for divorce.
Ryan called repeatedly and sent emails and even had flowers delivered to my office, but I forwarded everything to my attorney without responding. Brianna disappeared from his life before their flight even boarded, and honestly I was glad she got out before things became even worse.
As for me, I still took the Seattle trip.
I met my sister for dinner, cried once in the hotel bathroom when everything finally hit me, and then laughed the next day in a way I had not expected. Slowly I began building a life where I did not have to shrink myself just to keep someone else comfortable.
