  • A man without a home assisted me in changing a flat tire on Route 9, the place where my son vanished 20 years ago—what he left on my passenger seat brought me to my knees. I’m 50 years old. My son Daniel disappeared from a rest stop on that very highway in 2006 when he was just 7. I was buying him a Sprite. I turned around, and he was gone. Authorities searched for six weeks. Then six months. Eventually, the case went into a drawer and remained there for two decades. I stopped using Route 9 after the first anniversary. I couldn’t bear to be on that road. But last Tuesday, my GPS rerouted me through it, and twenty miles in, my back tire blew out. I was sitting on the shoulder, crying—not over the tire, but about everything—when a man in tattered clothing appeared from the trees. His coat was frayed, and his hands were rough. He didn’t say much—just nodded and got to work on the tire as if he had done it countless times before. When he was done, he wiped his hands and looked at me with the saddest eyes I have ever encountered. “You take care now, Margaret,” he said softly. I was taken aback. I never shared my name with him. Before I could utter a word, he turned and walked back into the trees. I got into my car, still shaking… and that’s when I noticed it. On the passenger seat. A faded Polaroid. 2006. A small child in a red shirt, smiling at someone behind the camera. My son. A picture I had NEVER seen before in my life. And on the white border, in unsteady handwriting, was AN ADDRESS. Only 40 miles away. I video-called the sheriff—the same man who closed Daniel’s case, now the mayor of our town. I showed him the Polaroid. His face turned pale. Then he said something that made my stomach drop— “Margaret, whatever you do… DO NOT go to that address.” But it was too late. Because I was already there. And as I reached for the door— it creaked open from the inside. I dropped to my knees.
