The driver stared through the windshield.
“Two vehicles are blocking the entrance.”
Roman looked ahead.
Two black SUVs were positioned across the road.
Their headlights were off.
The rain made everything difficult to see.
Then one of the doors opened.
A man stepped out.
Roman’s entire expression changed.
“Stay here.”
He reached for the door.
I grabbed his sleeve.
“Don’t leave me.”
He looked down at my hand.
For a moment, the coldness disappeared from his face.
“I need to make sure you get inside safely.”
“I’m scared.”
“I know.”
Another contraction hit.
I cried out and grabbed his arm.
Roman immediately looked toward the driver.
“Forget getting out.”
His voice became hard.
“Get through them.”
The driver tightened his grip on the steering wheel.
“Yes, sir.”
The engine roared.
The SUV moved forward.
And then—
A gunshot exploded through the rain.
I screamed.
Roman pulled me against his chest.
Another shot struck the side of the vehicle.
Glass shattered somewhere behind us.
Roman wrapped his body around mine.
“Don’t move.”
I could hear shouting outside.
More gunshots followed.
But Roman never let go.
He covered my body completely.
And as I clung to him, one terrifying thought entered my mind:
Whoever was waiting for us knew exactly where I was going to give birth.
