He installed a hidden camera because his 85-year-old mother was trembling with fear, and what it recorded at 11:47 PM destroyed 40 years of marriage.

PART 1

In that typical house in Ecatepec, with salmon-colored walls and a patio full of flowerpots, cruelty walked around in slippers. It spoke softly, in a sweet voice, so the neighbors would swear there was nothing but love and peace inside.

“Your mother is ruining my life, Alejandro. Honestly, one day you’re going to have to choose: either her or me.”

Carmen said those words on a hot May night while Doña Esperanza, 85 years old, slept in the back room hugging her tiger-print blanket.

Alejandro, 65, a retired public-school teacher, stood frozen in the hallway with a mug of coffee in his hand. He didn’t know whether he had just heard a real threat or simply the exhaustion of the woman he had been married to for 40 years.

Doña Esperanza had always been strong as an oak. She sold tamales outside the subway station, raised four children, buried two of them, and never asked anyone for a single peso.

But over the last two years, her memory had started failing. She would put the TV remote inside the tortilla basket, call Alejandro by her late husband’s name, and repeat over and over how she arrived in the capital from Michoacán.

The doctor at the public clinic was clear: it was early-stage dementia, and she could no longer live alone. Since the grandchildren were busy with their own lives and the other children lived far away, Alejandro brought his mother home.

In front of the neighbors, Carmen acted like a saint.

“She’ll never go without a warm meal or family here,” she would say with a smile while sweeping the sidewalk.

But behind closed doors, that huge smile disappeared the moment the gate shut.

At first, Doña Esperanza watched her soap operas, ate sweet bread with milk, and even laughed whenever Alejandro burned the rice.

But suddenly, she began fading away.

She lost a lot of weight. She spent hours staring blankly at the patio wall. And whenever Carmen entered the room, the old woman immediately lowered her head like a frightened dog waiting to be scolded.

One afternoon, Alejandro noticed a huge dark bruise on her arm.

“What happened, Mom?”

“I bumped into the nightstand, son,” she answered, trembling from head to toe.

The next day, she had another ugly mark near her shoulder.

“I fell in the bathroom,” she whispered.

But the floor was dry.

And the bed had no sharp corners.

The final straw came one morning when Alejandro returned early from the bakery. He found Carmen in the hallway whispering into the old woman’s ear.

“If you go around gossiping, nobody’s going to believe a crazy old woman who forgets everything.”

The moment she saw Alejandro, Carmen changed her expression instantly.

“I was just reminding her to take her diabetes medicine, honey.”

Doña Esperanza held her little cup of water with both hands, but she was shaking too badly to even drink.

That night, lying beside Carmen in the dark, Alejandro listened to her breathing. Could the woman he had shared debts, illnesses, and funerals with really be capable of hurting his own mother?

The next day, ashamed for even suspecting his wife, he bought a hidden camera and concealed it behind a framed picture of the Virgin Mary in the old woman’s bedroom.

At 11:47 PM, Carmen opened the bedroom door.

And what Alejandro discovered in that recording was so heartbreaking that honestly, nobody could imagine the nightmare that was about to unfold…
