“Biologically, yes.”

A murmur swept through the guests.

Ryan stared at me.

“You were pregnant.”

“The night you threw me into the rain.”

His face crumpled for one fraction of a second.

Eleanor recovered first.

“She’s lying.”

Naomi stepped through the doors carrying a leather case.

“DNA verification has been completed by three independent laboratories.”

She handed documents to the trust attorney seated near the aisle.

The attorney read the first page.

His expression changed.

“All three children are biological descendants of Madeline Hale Mercer and Ryan Cole Arden.”

Ryan turned sharply.

“What did you call me?”

The attorney looked toward Vivian.

“Ryan Cole Arden.”

Eleanor moved into the aisle.

“This ceremony will continue.”

“No,” Vivian said. “It will not.”

Ryan’s voice rose.

“What is happening?”

I looked at the man I had once loved.

“You spent your life believing you were the Mercer heir.”

“I am.”

“No.”

Eleanor slapped me.

The sound exploded through the ballroom.

Benjamin shouted.

Marcus moved forward, but I raised one hand.

I slowly turned my face back toward Eleanor.

She was breathing hard.

For the first time, I saw fear overpower her elegance.

“You should not have come here,” she whispered.

“I was brought here before,” I replied. “You arranged it.”

Ryan looked between us.

“What does that mean?”

Vivian addressed the guests.

“Thirty-seven years ago, Eleanor gave birth to a son fathered by Thomas Arden, her private security chief. She presented the child as my son Daniel’s biological heir.”

“That’s a lie!” Eleanor shouted.

Naomi opened her case.

“We have the original hospital blood records, Daniel Mercer’s private paternity test, and correspondence between Eleanor and Thomas Arden.”

Ryan stared at his mother.

She refused to look at him.

“Tell them,” he said.

“Ryan—”

“Tell them!”

The ballroom trembled with his voice.

Eleanor lifted her chin.

“Daniel raised you. That made you his son.”

“Was he my father?”

She said nothing.

Ryan stumbled backward.

The Mercer identity had been the foundation beneath every choice he made.

Now it disappeared beneath him.

He looked at me.

“Then who are you?”

“My mother was Rebecca Mercer. Daniel’s sister. Arthur and Vivian’s biological daughter.”

Understanding entered his eyes.

“You’re the heir.”

“No,” I said.

I looked down at Benjamin, Samuel, and Grace.

“They are.”

The Ledger

Eleanor attempted to leave.

Two investigators entered through the side doors.

“Eleanor Mercer,” one announced, “we have a warrant for your arrest.”

The room erupted.

Guests stood.

Reporters raised their phones.

Eleanor’s face became perfectly still.

“On what charge?”

“Conspiracy, fraud, medical tampering, obstruction of justice, and attempted homicide.”

Ryan turned toward Celeste.

She slowly lifted her veil.

Her face was wet with tears, but her voice remained clear.

“The ledger was exactly where you said it would be.”

Ryan stared at her.

“You opened the vault.”

“Yes.”

“You betrayed me.”

Celeste laughed bitterly.

“You taught me how.”

Investigators placed a sealed evidence bag on a nearby table.

Inside was a black leather book.

Ryan lunged toward it.

Marcus intercepted him.

The children pressed close to me.

I knelt.

“You are safe,” I whispered. “No one will touch you.”

Grace wrapped her arms around my neck.

Behind me, Naomi began speaking to the trust attorney.

Ryan pointed at Celeste.

“She planned this!”

“She cooperated with investigators,” Naomi said.

“She was my fiancée.”

“You were her evidence.”

The doors closed.

No one was permitted to leave until investigators completed identification and witness procedures.

Eleanor remained standing beneath the chandeliers, still wearing the falcon necklace.

Vivian approached her.

“That belongs to my daughter’s family.”

Eleanor touched the stones.

“I wore it longer than Rebecca ever could.”

“You stole her name, her inheritance, and her child’s future.”

“I preserved this family.”

“You poisoned it.”

Vivian removed the necklace from Eleanor’s throat.

For the first time, Eleanor looked old.

Ryan sank onto a chair near the altar.

He stared at the triplets.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

I almost pitied him.

Almost.

“Would you have protected them?”

“Yes.”

“You didn’t protect the five before them.”

His face twisted.

“I never touched the medication.”

“You recorded the payments.”

“I was protecting myself from my mother.”

“You knew she was ending my pregnancies.”

“I was trapped.”

I stepped closer.

“No, Ryan. I was trapped. I was married to a man who watched me bleed and allowed me to believe my body had betrayed us.”

“I loved you.”

The words came out broken.

I looked at the white roses, the candles, and the bride he had purchased with lies.

“You loved having access to me.”

“That isn’t true.”

“You knew who my mother was before you proposed.”

Ryan covered his face.

“My mother said if I married you, the trust would stay under our control.”

“Our control?”

“I thought eventually we would have a child.”

I stared at him.

“Your mother was preventing that.”

“At first, she said we needed time.”

“And later?”

“She said three pregnancies had already failed. She said another would expose everything.”

“So you let her cause two more.”

Ryan lowered his hands.

“I was afraid.”

Benjamin tugged my sleeve.

“Mama, can we go home?”

The room became silent enough that his small voice carried.

I lifted him into my arms.

“Yes.”

Ryan stood.

“Wait.”

Samuel moved behind Vivian.

Grace clung to my dress.

Ryan looked at them with desperate hunger.

“I’m their father.”

“No,” I said. “You are the man whose DNA they inherited.”

“I have rights.”

Naomi stepped forward.

“Actually, you signed those away.”

Ryan frowned.

“What?”

She removed another document.

“The settlement agreement you ordered Madeline to sign included a clause renouncing claims to any existing or future embryos, pregnancies, or children arising from the marriage.”

“I meant fertility-clinic embryos.”

“The language was written by your attorneys. It includes naturally conceived children.”

Ryan looked toward his legal team.

None of them met his eyes.

“You tried to make certain Madeline could never use a child to claim your fortune,” Naomi said. “Instead, you legally severed your own claim before learning the children existed.”

His mouth opened.

No sound emerged.

I remembered the envelope lying on my suitcase beneath the rain.

The document designed to erase me had erased him instead.

But that was not the final truth.

Vivian turned toward the investigators.

“Play the recording.”

Ryan looked up sharply.

“What recording?”

Celeste reached beneath the lace of her gown and removed a small microphone.

“The one you made in the vault twenty minutes ago.”

His face became gray.

An investigator connected a device to the ballroom sound system.

Ryan’s recorded voice filled the room.

“If the ledger disappears, there is nothing connecting us to Madeline’s miscarriages.”

Eleanor replied.

“You were the one who delivered the capsules.”

“I delivered two bottles. You handled the others.”

“You knew what they contained.”

“You told me the dosage was low.”

“And yet you continued.”
