Ava’s voice trembled as she spoke. “We can find him, Uncle Noah. He’s out there, and we have to try.”

“Try? You don’t understand what you’re asking,” I replied, my stomach twisting. “He’s been living a new life for a reason. What if he’s dangerous?”

“He’s our father!” Claire shot back, her eyes fierce, igniting a fire I hadn’t seen in years.

June stepped closer, her tone softer but firm. “You raised us. You taught us to face our fears. Why can’t we face this one?”

I felt cornered, the walls of my own home closing in. I’d sacrificed everything to keep them safe, and now they were asking me to let go. The air felt thick as I inhaled deeply. “You don’t know his story. You think this is just about wanting a dad?”

“We deserve to know,” June insisted. “We deserve to make our own choices.”

“And what about the fallout from those choices?” I whispered, my heart heavy with memories of the pain that had stitched our lives together.

Ava stepped forward, earnest and pleading. “Please, Uncle Noah, we need you to help us find him.”

After an agonizing silence, something in me cracked. “Fine,” I exhaled, though each word felt like a weight. “We’ll go.”

With the car packed, the anticipation crackled like static in the air. The girls laughed and shared excited glances, but my heart sank with each mile. I gripped the steering wheel tighter, unease crawling up my spine. “What if he doesn’t want to see you?”

Ava leaned forward, her eyes wide. “What if he does?”

“You mean what if he’s just waiting for a chance to hurt you?” I retorted, frustration bubbling to the surface.

“He’s still our father!” Claire shouted, the tension fraying at the edges of our journey.

As we drove through the fading daylight, June flipped through the hastily scribbled notes she had taken from the journal. “He’s changed, Noah. This could be our only chance.”

But I couldn’t shake the memories of my brother’s frantic eyes, the chaos that followed his decisions. “You don’t really know him,” I muttered, fighting back the storm of regret.

“You don’t know what he’s been through!” Ava replied, tears glistening in her eyes.

The tension filled the car like hot air, and I bypassed a gas station, trying to drown out their voices with the sound of the engine. We clocked in the miles, each one a painful reminder of the risks we were taking.

Finally, we pulled onto a cracked gravel road, the faint outline of an old, run-down house in the distance. My heart raced. “This is it?” I asked, the unease pounding in my chest.

They nodded, eyes full of hope. But as we stepped out of the car, the reality sunk in. The house stood abandoned, weeds choking the porch like forgotten memories. A chill brushed against my skin.

When they finally arrived at the location, they discovered it had been abandoned for years, leaving them with more questions than answers.
