“Grace, my husband just died. Whatever this is, can it not wait one more day?”
“No.” She stepped inside and shut the door behind her. “I’ve been waiting my whole life to stop being a secret. I can’t wait one more day.”
“He made me swear I’d only open it in front of you.”
She sat on the edge of the bed.
The mattress dipped.
I noticed how her fingers trembled around the box.
“Please sit up,” she said quietly. “You need to be sitting up for this.”
“Grace.”
“You have no idea what David did.” She swallowed. “You have no idea who he really was. And I’m so, so sorry, because you’ve been kind to me, and now I’m the one who has to break your heart.”
“You need to be sitting up for this.”
I pulled the blanket up around my shoulders.
“I promised him,” she whispered. “It’s time you knew the truth about what was going on between us.”
Grace set the wooden box on the bed in my reach.
“Open it,” she said. “I promised him I wouldn’t say a word until you saw everything for yourself.”
I lifted the lid.
“It’s time you knew the truth.”
Inside lay a bundle of yellowed letters tied with a faded ribbon.
And a small stack of photographs curled at the corners.
The top photo was not of David.
It was of his father, dead now for years.
He was standing beside a young woman I had never seen.
“Who is this woman?” I asked.
