Below them, in smaller letters: “I chose these because they mean strong and kind.
That’s what I want my girls to be.
Strong and kind.
Just like their father.”
I folded the paper and put it in my shirt pocket.
“I’m keeping this,” I said.
Grace smiled.
“We thought you would.”
Chris raised his glass.
“To Naomi.”
We all raised our glasses.
“To Naomi.”
The kitchen was warm.
The girls were laughing about something Chris said.
The letters were still on the table.
The towels were folded neatly beside them.
Eighteen years ago, I found two baby girls wrapped in towels on a beach and thought I was saving someone else’s children.
It turns out, they were saving me.
And the woman I loved had planned it all — every piece of it — from the very beginning.
Some people say love ends when someone is gone.
But Naomi’s love walked into that beach stall in the form of two crying babies, and it stayed in my kitchen for eighteen years, and it was sitting at my table tonight, and it will be there tomorrow.
That’s the thing about real love.
It doesn’t need to be in the room to fill it.
