Arthur nodded once.
Tears streamed down his face.
“I never wanted to take anything from you.”
His voice broke.
“I only wanted to see you grow up.”
I stared at him.
“All those years?”
“Yes.”
“And Sophie?”
He looked at her.
“I watched her too.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Your wife asked me to wait.”
He wiped his face.
“She said you deserved the right to choose me.”
Then:
“Not have another loss and another secret forced on you at the same time.”
I looked into his face.
And now that I knew—
I couldn’t stop seeing it.
My mother.
My own features.
Family.
Eighteen years of missed mornings.
Then I stepped forward.
And hugged him.
Arthur’s shoulders shook against mine.
“You’re my brother.”
I said it again.
“You’re my brother.”
SOPHIE STEPPED BETWEEN US
She was crying too.
“Dad?”
