MY EX-HUSBAND CALLED FROM HIS WEDDING TO MOCK ME—THEN HE HEARD A NEWBORN CRY IN MY HOSPITAL ROOM

articleUseronAugust 14, 2026

I hesitated.

“Evelyn.”

His eyes closed.

His mother’s name.

Evelyn Mercer had died nine years earlier.

She had been elegant, difficult, occasionally terrifying—

but she had also been one of the only people in Derek’s family who never treated my infertility like a defect I had deliberately brought into their bloodline.

During her final Christmas, she once took my hand and said:

“If you two ever get your miracle girl, promise me you’ll give her my name somewhere.”

I had promised.

Derek lowered himself into the visitor chair.

“You remembered.”

“I remember people who were kind to me.”

That hurt him.

I saw it.

Sloane looked between us.

“We need to go.”

Neither of us answered.

“Derek, there are almost three hundred guests waiting. Your father is there. Half the board is there. Two reporters are outside. We cannot disappear for hours because Rachel decided to stage—”

Derek turned.

“I have a daughter.”

Sloane crossed her arms.

“Apparently.”

The word escaped too quickly.

Derek stared at her.

“What did you just say?”

“I said nothing.”

“You said apparently.”

“Because we don’t know anything yet.”

She looked at me.

“For all we know, this is exactly what she wanted.”

I said, “Then test her.”

Derek blinked.

“What?”

“You want a paternity test?”

“Yes.”

“Do it.”

“Today.”

“Fine.”

That unsettled him more than resistance would have.

Within ninety minutes, attorneys arrived.

A hospital administrator came upstairs.

Cheek swabs were collected.

Paperwork was witnessed.

A private laboratory agreed to expedite the test because corporate litigation might be involved.

Sloane spent most of the process pacing in the hallway, whispering angrily into her phone.

At one point I heard her say:

“No, Martin, Derek is not abandoning the wedding. There’s been an emergency.”

An emergency.

My daughter had been alive for less than half a day and Sloane already considered her a crisis.

Derek stood near the window.

Finally, he said, “You could have told my father.”

“Why?”

“He would have listened.”

“I wasn’t married to your father.”

“That’s not what I meant.”

“It’s exactly what you meant.”

He rubbed his forehead.

“You should’ve found another way.”

There it was.

The old Derek.

No matter what happened, he could always find a doorway that led back to my responsibility.

“I called.”

“I didn’t know.”

“I emailed.”

“Sloane handled—”

“I requested five minutes alone with you before the hearing.”

He said nothing.

“Your attorney told mine you didn’t want direct contact because you were worried I’d become emotionally manipulative.”

Derek looked down.

“I didn’t know that.”

“You didn’t want to know.”

“That isn’t the same thing.”

“It is the only thing that matters.”

Then I said, “Besides, you wanted that divorce finished quickly because you believed Sloane was pregnant.”

Sloane had just reentered the room.

She stopped.

Derek turned toward her.

I continued.

“You told me yourself.”

Seven months earlier, Derek had come home after midnight and sat across from me at our kitchen island.

He said there was someone else.

I already knew.

Then he told me something I didn’t know.

Sloane was pregnant.

After years of fertility treatments, surgeries, injections and loss, my husband told me another woman was carrying his baby.

I remember staring at the marble countertop because looking at his face hurt too much.

He said he needed to “do the right thing.”

He said dragging out the divorce would harm an innocent child.

He said he wanted our marriage ended quietly.

No scandal.

No forensic discovery.
