That last message almost made me laugh.
Ugly.
As if cutting off my hair was beautiful.
As if destroying my dignity was reasonable.
As if I was the problem because I refused to disappear quietly.
I saved every message.
Every voicemail.
Every email.
Because Daniel had one weakness.
He loved documenting his own arrogance.
On the third morning, Marcus called.
“Claire.”
I sat down before answering.
“What did you find?”
“The DNA result came back.”
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“And?”
“Male DNA.”
The room became silent.
“Whose?”
“We don’t have a match yet.”
My heart sank.
“But we found something else.”
“What?”
“The blood wasn’t the only evidence.”
I stood.
“What do you mean?”
“The hinge.”
I looked toward the evidence bag.
“The hinge had microscopic fibers trapped inside.”
“From what?”
Marcus hesitated.
“Carpet fibers.”
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Where?”
“From an expensive wool carpet. Dark blue.”
I already knew.
Daniel’s office.
The one room Vanessa was never supposed to enter.
The one room Daniel claimed only employees had access to.
“Marcus…”
“Yes?”
“Can you compare it to the office?”
“I already did.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
“And?”
“It matches.”
Daniel’s company had a private executive floor downtown.
A place where he thought he controlled everything.
A place where he had spent years hiding money.
A place where he believed no one could touch him.
He was wrong.
