“I have to confront them,” I said, steel forming in my voice.
We moved through the house quietly, Sarah guiding me to the study. “There’s something you need to see,” she said, pulling out her phone.
“What is it?” I asked, a sense of foreboding creeping in.
As she scrolled, I caught a glimpse of the recording app. “Wait, what are you—”
She pressed play, and a rough voice filled the room. It was my mother, speaking to Natalie about Claire. “We have to keep her under control. If she thinks she can leave, we’ll lose everything.”
My breath hitched. No. This couldn’t be happening.
“When she pushes back, we need to remind her who’s in charge,” my mother continued, her tone cold and calculating.
My hands trembled as reality crashed over me. I didn’t just have proof of their manipulation; I had a weapon. But just before I could react, my phone buzzed violently in my pocket. A call. From the hospital.
Uncovering the Truth
Gritting my teeth, I pressed play on the recording. The faint sound of my mother’s voice crackled to life, sharp and cold, slicing through the silence of the empty room.
