The lawyer’s voice cut through the silence like a blade.

He opened a second envelope.

“She left a final statement to be read aloud.”

Michael’s voice remained steady, but every word landed like a hammer.

“If you are hearing this, it means I did not live to raise my child. Ethan, you told me the bruises were my fault. You told me the late nights were work. You told me the woman in the red dress was just a colleague. I believed you longer than I should have. I stayed because I wanted our baby to have a father. I was wrong.

To the woman standing beside him today: you did not win. You inherited a man who hits what he cannot control and discards what he no longer needs. I hope the victory tastes as bitter as it should.

Mother—I’m sorry I didn’t come home when you asked. I love you. Take care of yourself. And if my child survives me, raise them far away from this name.”

The lawyer closed the folder.

“Emily’s pregnancy ended the same night she died of internal injuries consistent with repeated blunt-force trauma. The medical examiner’s report has already been forwarded to the district attorney. An investigation is open.”

Ethan stood frozen, mouth open, the color gone from his face. The woman in red had stopped smiling. Her hand slipped off his arm as if the fabric had burned her.

I rose from the pew.

I walked past them both without a word, stopped at the casket, and laid my hand on the polished wood.

“I heard you, sweetheart,” I whispered. “And I will never let them win.”

Then I turned and faced the two people who had walked into my daughter’s funeral like it was a victory party.

“You may leave now,” I said. “You are not welcome at the burial. You are not welcome in this family. And by the time the investigation finishes, you will not be welcome in this city.”

Ethan opened his mouth.

No sound came out.

The woman in red was already backing toward the door.

I sat down again, eyes fixed on the casket, and waited for the service to continue.

For the first time since the church doors had opened, the room belonged to Emily again.
