Baking soda on the face: benefits, risks, and how to use it safely (plus 4 gentle recipes).

articleUseronJuly 19, 2026

Recipe 1: Ultra-Soothing Honey Paste

Mix 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda with 1 tablespoon of raw honey and enough water to make a smooth, spreadable paste. Honey has antibacterial and hydrating properties that can be soothing. Apply a very thin layer to clean skin, leave for 60-90 seconds, gently massaging in small circular motions, then rinse thoroughly. Follow with a moisturizer. Ideal for occasionally testing oil control on normal to slightly oily skin.

Recipe 2: Soothing Oatmeal and Baking Soda Blend
: Grind 1 tablespoon of rolled oats into a fine powder, then mix with 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda and a few drops of water or pure aloe vera gel to create a smooth paste. Oats are known for their soothing and skin barrier-supporting properties. Apply sparingly, massage gently for less than 60 seconds, and rinse. This version is less abrasive and may be suitable for those who want a light exfoliating effect without overdoing it.

Recipe 3: Moisturizing Aloe Vera Version

Mix 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda with 1.5 tablespoons of pure aloe vera gel (without added alcohol or fragrance) and, if desired, a drizzle of honey. Aloe has a cooling and hydrating effect that can partially counteract the drying effect. Apply a thin layer, leave on for up to 1-2 minutes, rinse thoroughly, and immediately moisturize. Many find this the gentlest of the four options for sensitive skin.

Recipe 4: Spot Treatment Paste.
For specific problems only, mix a pinch (less than ⅛ teaspoon) of baking soda with a pea-sized amount of honey or aloe gel. Apply only to the affected area, leave on for 30-60 seconds, then rinse thoroughly. Never use this product on your entire face. This will ensure extremely limited and localized exposure.

In any case, consider these treatments as occasional experiments rather than part of a regular routine. Monitor your skin closely for several days afterward.

Safer, science-backed alternatives worth trying.

If your goals include smoother texture, better sebum control, or soothed skin, consider ingredients with higher safety profiles and clinical support. Niacinamide helps regulate sebum production and strengthen the skin barrier. Gentle chemical exfoliants like lactic or mandelic acid work at skin-friendly pH levels. Colloidal oatmeal masks soothe irritation without altering acidity. Azelaic acid offers multiple benefits for skin tone and blemishes, with excellent tolerability. These options offer results with significantly lower risk when used correctly.
