I caught my husband sleeping with my brother’s wife, so I quietly swapped the lubricant in his bag for industrial glue.

For several seconds, the h/o/spital room seemed to lose all sound. The monitors continued their steady rhythm beside Julian’s bed, but everything else faded beneath the force of those two words.

Brandon stared at him as if he had spoken in another language.

“My mother-in-law?” he asked.

Julian closed his eyes.

“She started it,” he murmured. “Not the affair. Everything before that.”

I stood completely still. My mother had been part of our company since my father founded it. She had served on the board, advised Julian when he first joined the business, and comforted me through every failed fertility appointment.

She had held my hand while I cried.

She had told me some things were not meant to be.

Now Julian was claiming she had secretly shaped the very tragedy she pretended to mourn.

“You’re lying,” I said.

Julian opened his eyes again. He looked exhausted, but not confused.

“I wish I were.”

“Why would she reject my treatment?”

“To keep you dependent.”

The answer came too quickly.

My chest tightened.

“Dependent on whom?”

“On her. On me. On the company.” His voice dropped. “Eleanor believed a child would change you. She thought you would leave the business, demand your full inheritance, and break up the voting trust.”

“That makes no sense.”

“It made sense to her.”

Brandon stepped closer to the bed.

“And Serena?”

Julian glanced toward the door, suddenly nervous.

“Serena was supposed to distract me.”

Brandon’s expression hardened.

“My wife was assigned to seduce you?”

“No.” Julian swallowed. “She was assigned to watch me.”

The room fell silent again.

A nurse passed outside, her footsteps soft against the polished floor. I waited until the sound disappeared.

“Start at the beginning,” I said.

Julian looked at me with something I had never expected to see in his eyes.

Shame.

“Your mother approached me two months before our wedding,” he said. “She told me the company needed stability. She said you were emotional, idealistic, too willing to trust people.”

“My own mother said that?”

“She said your father had spoiled you with principles.”

The words struck harder than I expected.

My father had been gone for eleven years. He had built Ashford Maritime from a warehouse office and two borrowed trucks. He had believed business meant responsibility. Whenever someone suggested cutting corners, he would say that money remembered how it was earned.

After his sudden d/e/@/th, my mother took his seat on the board.

I had believed she was protecting his legacy.

“What did she offer you?” I asked.

Julian looked away.

“Control.”

Of course.
