He had always wanted the company to recognize him as more than the husband of its founder’s daughter. My mother must have understood that hunger from the beginning.
“She promised that if I kept you calm and allowed her to manage the voting trust, I would eventually become chief executive. She said it would protect everyone.”
“And you believed her.”
“At first.”
“At first?”
“She gave me small instructions. Delay a meeting. Redirect a report. Convince you not to challenge a board decision. Nothing that looked serious.”
“Until the medical form.”
Julian’s face tightened.
“I didn’t know about that until later.”
“But you knew eventually.”
“Yes.”
“And said nothing.”
His silence was an answer.
I felt something inside me settle into a cold, unfamiliar shape. The grief I had carried for years did not vanish. It transformed. The sadness became clarity, and the clarity was far more dangerous.
Brandon placed both hands on the rail of Julian’s bed.
“Where does Serena fit?”
“Eleanor hired her family’s consulting firm six years ago. Serena’s uncle created the shell companies. Her cousin handled overseas transfers. Serena attended events, collected information, and reported who was suspicious.”
Brandon’s jaw tightened.
“She married me to get close to the company?”
“I don’t know.”
“You know enough.”
Julian looked at him.
“She may have cared about you.”
Brandon laughed once, without humor.
“That’s supposed to help?”
“No.”
I opened the folder again. The documents now seemed heavier than paper. Every page represented a conversation I had misunderstood, a decision made around me, a door closed before I knew it existed.
“Why the affair?” I asked.
Julian’s eyes moved toward me.
“That part wasn’t planned.”
It was almost insulting that he expected honesty to matter now.
“You expect me to believe Serena watched you for my mother, then accidentally began sleeping with you?”
“It started after she discovered I was moving money into a private account.”
Brandon’s head lifted.
“You were stealing from them too?”
Julian’s expression twisted.
“I was creating insurance.”
“Call it what it was,” I said.
“Fine. It was fr/@ud.”
The word hung between us.
“Serena found out,” he continued. “She threatened to expose me. I threatened to expose her family’s transfers. After that, we were trapped together.”
“And somehow that became an affair.”
Julian said nothing.
The old version of me might have demanded details. She might have asked where they met, what lies they told, whether he had ever compared us.
But those questions belonged to a smaller betrayal.
The affair was no longer the center of the story. It was only smoke rising from a much deeper fire.
“Why did you surrender the safe combination?” I asked.
“Because Eleanor was going to erase everything.”
“You could have warned us before your s/u/rgery.”
“I didn’t know whether I would wake up.”
