I had just arrived home from a business trip when my eight-year-old daughter whispered the secret her mother thought would remain hidden.
I had been home for less than fifteen minutes.
My suitcase was still by the front door. My jacket was still on the sofa. I had barely stepped inside when I knew something was wrong.
No little feet running toward me.
No laughter.
No hug.
Just silence.
Then I heard her voice coming from the bedroom.
Soft. Fragile. Almost a whisper.
“Dad… please don’t be angry,” she said. “Mom told me that if I told you, things would get worse. But my back hurts… and I can’t sleep.”
I froze in the hallway.
