I caught my husband sleeping with my brother’s wife, so I quietly swapped the lubricant in his bag for industrial glue.

“The public accounts were strong. The private debts were not. Your father borrowed heavily to expand the fleet. Then three contracts failed. He hid the losses because he believed he could recover.”

My father, the man who said money remembered how it was earned, had hidden debts from the board.

I wanted to reject the idea immediately.

But a memory returned.

The year before his d/e/@/th, he had stopped sleeping. I oft

en found him in his study before dawn, staring at shipping reports. He told me he was planning for the future.

Perhaps he had been trying to escape it.

My mother placed another file on the table.

“The buyer intended to separate the company, sell the vessels, dismiss most of the staff, and keep only the port contracts. Thousands of people would have lost their jobs.”

“So you stopped the sale,” Brandon said.

“Yes.”

“How?”

She looked at me.

“I changed the board vote.”

“With bl/@ckmail?”

“With information.”

“That is bl/@ckmail,” I said.

“Words are often chosen by whoever survives the decision.”

I opened my drawer before she could stop me.

Inside were photographs, school reports, medical records, copies of private messages, even pages from journals I had kept as a teenager.

My entire life had been cataloged.

Near the bottom was a slim red folder.

I opened it.

The first page was a laboratory report from our fertility clinic.

Not the rejected treatment form.

A later report.

A procedure had taken place.

My name appeared under Patient.

The date was six months after the consultation I remembered.

“I never had this procedure,” I whispered.

My mother said nothing.

Beneath the report was a document confirming that viable embryos had been created and placed in long-term storage.

I read the sentence twice.

Then a third time.

“This says the treatment happened.”

Brandon moved beside me.

“But you said it was rejected.”

“It was,” I said. “I never signed approval. I never went through the procedure.”

My mother’s face remained calm, but something had shifted behind her eyes.

For the first time that night, she looked uncertain.

I pulled out the next page.

A transfer authorization.

The section naming the recipient had been covered by a black strip.

“What did you do?” I asked.

My mother did not answer.

I stepped toward her.

“What did you do with them?”

She looked at the folder, then at me.

“I prevented an inheritance war.”

The meaning arrived slowly.

Then all at once.

“You used them.”

“It was more complicated than that.”

“You used my embryos.”

Brandon stared at her in disbelief.

“Who carried the child?”

My mother’s gaze moved toward one of the security monitors.

A camera showed the front entrance upstairs.

Someone had entered the house.

Serena.

She was soaked from the rain, one hand gripping the shoulder of a teenage girl standing beside her.

The girl looked frightened and confused.

She had dark hair, pale skin, and unmistakably familiar eyes.

My eyes.

For a moment, no one in the archive room breathed.

Brandon looked from the monitor to me.

Then to my mother.

“No,” he whispered.

My mother closed her eyes.

The hidden door upstairs opened, and Serena’s voice echoed faintly down the staircase.

“Eleanor! It’s over. She deserves to know.”

I stared at the girl on the screen.

She appeared to be about fourteen.

Fourteen years earlier, my mother had convinced me to delay starting a family until Julian and I were settled.

Fourteen years earlier, Serena’s family had first received money from an Ashford account.
