I was too weak to stand when my husband zipped his suitcase and smiled. “You’ll be fine for a few weeks,” he said before leaving for Europe with his family. Hours later, I discovered

Part 1

I had been ill for almost three months when my husband, Jason, told me he would be traveling to Europe with his parents and his younger sister.

“You’ll be fine,” he said, fastening his suitcase. “It’s only seventy-four days.”

I was still recovering from a severe autoimmune flare that had left me exhausted, unsteady, and reliant on medication every day. My doctor had made it clear that I could not miss a single dose. Jason knew that perfectly well. He had been sitting beside me during the appointment.

“You can’t leave me alone that long,” I said. “I can barely make it upstairs.”

He gave an irritated sigh and rolled his eyes. “My family planned this trip years ago. I’m not canceling because you’re being dramatic.”

On the morning of their departure, Jason brought me a cup of tea and set my pill organizer on the bedside table. He pressed a kiss to my forehead and told me he would call once he reached the airport.

Two hours later, I stretched toward the organizer.

Every compartment was empty.

I searched all the places I could manage to reach—the drawers, cupboards, bags, and cabinets nearby. My prescription bottles had disappeared as well. When I tried calling Jason, my phone displayed no service. The Wi-Fi connection had also been cut.

A moment later, the lights shut off.

I turned the faucet.

No water came out.

Fear tightened around my chest. I forced myself toward the front entrance, but the deadbolt refused to turn. It had been secured from the other side. The back door was locked the same way, and several of the windows had been fastened shut with screws.

That was the moment the truth became clear.

Jason had not merely left me behind.

He had deliberately turned the house into a cage.

I dragged myself into the kitchen and searched until I found an old emergency phone hidden inside a drawer. The battery showed only six percent. I dialed 911, but the connection dropped before I could finish giving the dispatcher my address.

I called again.

This time, the operator remained connected just long enough to hear my name and the street where I lived.

Only minutes later, someone began hammering on the front door.

“Police! Is anyone inside?”

I screamed as loudly as I could until my throat felt raw.

Firefighters eventually forced their way through the rear entrance. They discovered me collapsed beside the kitchen table.

At the hospital, the doctors told me I had been only hours away from a potentially fatal medical emergency.

Yet the most horrifying discovery came the following morning.

Detective Laura Bennett stood beside my bed and laid several photographs across the blanket.

Security footage showed Jason coming back to the house after the rest of his family had left for the airport.

He was holding my medication.

Then he handed it to another woman.

# Part 2

The woman captured in the security footage was Melissa Grant, one of Jason’s coworkers.

The instant I saw her face, I knew exactly who she was. She had come to our Christmas party, delivered flowers after I first became sick, and even smiled at me once while saying how fortunate I was to have such a caring husband.

Detective Bennett explained that a neighbor’s surveillance camera had recorded Melissa waiting inside her car while Jason disconnected the utilities and secured every door. Once he finished, he walked over, handed her a pharmacy bag, and kissed her.

That bag contained my medication.

“Why would she want it?” I asked.
