I went to the airport only to say goodbye to a friend.0198T- I never expected to see my husband there, embracing the woman he insisted was “only a coworker.” As I stepped closer, my heart pounding, I heard him murmur, “Everything is ready. That idiot is about to lose everything.” She laughed and answered, “And she won’t even know it’s coming.” I didn’t cry or confront them. I smiled. Because I had already prepared my own trap.

Marcus walked into the living room, looking down at Julian, who was sitting paralyzed on the sofa.

“Julian Vance,” Marcus stated, handing a legal packet to one of the officers. “You are being served with a formal notice of immediate divorce, a permanent restraining order regarding this property, and a felony warrant for corporate fraud and attempted grand larceny.”

The officers stepped forward, pulling Julian up from the sofa and pulling his hands behind his back. The sharp, metallic click of handcuffs echoed through the high-ceilinged room.

“Clara!” Julian wept, tears spilling over his cheeks as the officers turned him toward the door. “Please! We can fix this! It was Sarah! She convinced me to do it! Please, don’t do this to me!”

I stood by the open doorway, holding the heavy oak door for the officers.

I looked at the man who had tried to steal my inheritance, my home, and my future—the man who had stood at an airport gate laughing about destroying my life.

“Goodbye, Julian,” I said softly.

As the police car pulled away down the driveway, its red and blue lights flashing against the green pine trees, the afternoon sun broke through the clouds, casting a warm, golden light across the front porch.

Marcus walked out, resting a heavy, comforting hand on my shoulder. “Are you going to be alright, Clara?”

I looked out over the quiet yard, listening to the gentle rustle of the wind through the oak trees my father had planted thirty years ago. The house was safe. My father’s legacy was intact. And the dark shadow of betrayal had been lifted from my life forever.

I turned back toward the warm, sunlit hallway, took a deep breath of the clean mountain air, and smiled.
