“Are you threatening divorce?”

My voice remained steady.
“I am explaining what your refusal would mean.”
For once, he did not argue.
The next month did not erase what Callum had done.
It was not easy.
He confused bottles.
Forgot laundry inside the washing machine.
Once, he failed to prepare clean bottles before all three babies woke.
I found him at the sink while the nursery filled with crying.
“Tell me what to do,” he said.
“Begin washing.”

“I will feed them this time. Tomorrow, prepare everything before they become hungry.”
A few nights later, he called from the nursery.
“Miles will not settle.”

“Walking. Rocking. Singing.”
“Keep going.”
“He doesn’t want me.”
I stood in the doorway.
“He doesn’t know you yet.”

That truth hurt him.

He sat with Miles instead of handing him back.

“I heard he returned early.”
“He did.”
“Is everything fixed?”
“No.”
I saw Callum listening from the kitchen.
“But he is finally doing the work.”

I accepted the food.
When someone offered to hold a baby, I slept instead of cleaning.
One morning, Callum found the old fatherhood shirt folded on the bed.
“Are you giving this back?”

Maisie cried from the nursery.

He left without waiting for instructions.

Dean pointed toward the message.
“Still exhausted?”
Callum looked toward the nursery.
“Yes.”
Then he folded another sleeper.
“But now I have earned the right to say it.”
I did not praise him.
He did not need applause for participating in the family he had helped create.
Still, I saw the difference.
The trip to Solara Bay did not save our marriage.
The suitcase did not repair it.
Public embarrassment did not transform Callum into a father.
