PART 2
Over the next few days, my suspicion only grew.
I hated myself for feeling that way, but I couldn’t ignore the knot in my stomach. Instead of asking Marcus directly, I made a decision I’m still ashamed of.
I installed a small camera in Lena’s room.
When I finally watched the footage, the truth began to unfold in a way I never expected.
Night after night, Lena would wake up from nightmares. She would sit up in bed, trembling, then quietly text Marcus.
And every time, Marcus would come to her door.
He never crossed a line.
He never did anything wrong.
He would simply sit beside her bed, sometimes on the floor, sometimes in the chair near her window, staying there until her breathing slowed and she felt calm enough to sleep again.
Some nights, Lena cried.
Some nights, she talked.
Some nights, she said nothing at all and just needed someone in the room.
Then I saw the moment that completely broke me.
Marcus sat beside her and said gently, “Lena, we can’t keep hiding this from your mom. She loves you. She needs to know.”
Lena immediately shook her head.
“No,” she whispered. “Please don’t tell her. She’s finally happy. I don’t want to ruin that.”
I froze.
That was when everything changed.
There was no betrayal.
No terrible secret.
No danger hiding in the dark.
Just a scared teenage girl trying not to burden her mother… and a man who made the wrong choice by carrying her pain alone.
I broke down crying.
For so long, I had been watching for danger outside our home that I missed the pain quietly growing inside it.
The next day, I sat Marcus and Lena down at the kitchen table.
My hands were shaking as I told them the truth.
I admitted everything.
Even the camera.
Lena’s face changed instantly. She was furious. Hurt. Embarrassed. She felt violated, and she had every right to feel that way.
I didn’t defend myself.
I didn’t make excuses.
I only said, “I’m sorry. I was scared, but that doesn’t make what I did right.”
For a long moment, nobody spoke.
