Lemon Juice: It is rich in citric acid (AHA) and vitamin C. Citric acid acts as a gentle chemical exfoliant, helping to dissolve the layer of dead skin cells that accumulate on the skin’s surface. This promotes cell renewal, revealing brighter, more even skin. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that can help inhibit melanin production, reducing dark spots and brightening the complexion. However, pure lemon juice is very acidic (low pH) and can be extremely irritating, causing dryness, redness, and photosensitivity, making the skin more vulnerable to sun damage.
Baking Soda: This ingredient generates the most debate. Baking soda has a highly alkaline pH (around 9), while the skin’s protective acid mantle has a pH of approximately 4.5 to 5.5. Applying such an alkaline substance can severely disrupt the skin barrier, weakening and dehydrating it, and making it more susceptible to infections and irritations. Its function in this recipe is that of a gentle mechanical exfoliant and foaming/cleansing agent, but its frequent use is discouraged by most dermatologists.
