Charlotte stared at the documents, her legs giving out, and she sank onto my sofa. “Why? You don’t owe me anything. That was twenty years ago.”

“Kindness doesn’t have an expiration date, Charlotte,” I replied. “You saw a person when everyone else saw a monster. Today, I’m seeing the person you are, not the life you’ve been forced to live.”

It took time, but Charlotte eventually shed the exhaustion that had defined her for so long. She became a pillar of my company, using her empathy to build programs that helped people who were struggling, just like she had been. We didn’t end up together in the romantic sense—our paths had grown too different—but we became the best of friends, a duo bonded by a past that taught us both the true meaning of character.
