THE NIGHT MY HUSBAND WAS RUSHED TO THE ER WITH MY BROTHER’S WIFE

Part Three: The Woman Behind the Affair

Two days after the board publicly announced my appointment, I received a message from Tessa’s closest friend.

Her name was Brooke Ellis.

She asked to meet me at a restaurant outside Lakehurst.

Brooke arrived carrying a small encrypted drive.

She placed it between us.

“Tessa did not begin the affair because she was in love with Grant,” she said.

“That does not improve the situation.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Because the affair was supposed to be an assignment.”

I stared at her.

“An assignment for whom?”

“Silas Crowe.”

Silas Crowe was the founder of Crowe Industrial Systems, Hartwell Global’s largest competitor.

For years, Silas had attempted to purchase Hartwell projects, poach our executives and discredit our bids.

According to the files Brooke provided, Silas had offered Tessa twenty-five million dollars to get close to Grant.

Her task was to record confidential conversations, collect internal documents and create a scandal powerful enough to fracture the Hart family.

At the time, Tessa’s father needed an experimental heart operation that his insurance refused to cover.

Silas paid the medical deposit.

Tessa accepted.

“Did Mason know about her father’s medical debt?” I asked.

“No. Tessa was ashamed.”

“So she betrayed her husband to pay for the operation.”

“At first.”

I looked at Brooke.

“What does that mean?”

Brooke lowered her eyes.

“She tried to stop after the surgery. Silas threatened to expose everything she had already done.”

“So she was trapped.”

“For a while.”

“And after that?”

“She began enjoying the money. The hotels. The gifts. Grant’s attention.”

The affair had begun as espionage.

Eventually, it became real enough to destroy two marriages.

The drive contained messages between Silas and Tessa.

One warned that an additional operative remained inside Hartwell’s executive division.

I hired an independent cyber-forensics team that afternoon.

Within thirty-six hours, they identified the insider.

Nathan Cole, our senior director of strategic development.

Grant had recruited him two years earlier.

Nathan had delayed submissions, altered pricing models and sent confidential bid information to Crowe Industrial.

When confronted with phone records and transfers, he confessed.

He agreed to sign a statement identifying Silas as the person directing the sabotage.

He never had the opportunity.

The next morning, federal agents entered Hartwell Tower and arrested Mason.

They found twenty-five million dollars in cash and bearer bonds hidden inside the trunk of his SUV.

They also produced a transportation agreement bearing his signature.

The contract appeared to connect Mason to an international bribery scheme.

The amount matched the money Silas had promised Tessa.

Reporters filled the lobby as agents led my brother outside in handcuffs.

Mason looked back at me.

“I didn’t do this.”

“I know.”

My phone rang before the elevators closed.

Silas Crowe was on the line.

“Resign by nine tomorrow morning,” he said, “or your brother will spend the next twenty years explaining why he betrayed his own company.”

“You framed him.”

“Prove it.”

The call ended.

Less than one minute later, a message arrived from Grant.

I know who is financing Crowe.

It isn’t an outside investor.

Someone inside your family started this years ago.

A financial document was attached.

At the bottom was a name.

Douglas Hart.

My father’s older brother.

President of Hartwell Global’s property development division.

Uncle Douglas had attended every Christmas dinner of my childhood.

He taught Mason to drive.

He stood beside my father at my wedding and spoke about loyalty.

Now financial records showed billions moving from an investment company called Summit Ridge Capital into accounts controlled by Silas Crowe.

Summit Ridge belonged to Douglas.

I did not want the document to be real.

But belief had become a luxury I could no longer afford.

Evidence was the only thing keeping my family alive.
