THE NIGHT MY HUSBAND WAS RUSHED TO THE ER WITH MY BROTHER’S WIFE

Part Four: The Husband Who Needed Me

I met Grant at the rehabilitation center the following morning.

He used a walker and moved slowly.

For the first time since I had known him, he looked uncertain.

He placed another drive on the table.

“Silas approached me last year,” he said.

“To recruit you?”

“To purchase your shares after the divorce.”

“And you agreed.”

“Not at first.”

“But eventually.”

Grant looked away.

“He already knew about Tessa. He had photographs and recordings. He threatened to release everything unless I cooperated.”

“You could have told me.”

“I would have lost our marriage.”

“You had already destroyed our marriage.”

“I would have lost my position.”

“That was the part you were protecting.”

He did not deny it.

The drive contained a recording of Silas ordering two men to plant the cash inside Mason’s vehicle.

There were vehicle registrations, payment receipts and security-camera timestamps.

Traffic footage showed the men entering Hartwell’s private garage hours before Mason’s arrest.

Grant had gathered the information because Silas planned to discard him once the takeover succeeded.

“You are not helping me because you suddenly developed a conscience,” I said.

“I’m helping because Silas will destroy all of us.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“But it’s what I have.”

Forty-eight hours after Serena delivered the evidence to prosecutors, the charges against Mason were dismissed.

He emerged from the federal courthouse wearing the same suit he had been arrested in.

I wrapped my arms around him.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then Mason whispered, “Tessa wants to testify.”

“You don’t owe her protection.”

“I know.”

“Do you still love her?”

He looked toward the reporters gathered behind the barricades.

“Yes.”

“Loving her does not require you to take her back.”

“I don’t know what I’m going to do.”

“You don’t need to decide today.”

Tessa gave a sworn deposition from her hospital room.

She admitted accepting Silas’s money.

She described the surveillance, the threats and the meetings involving Grant, Silas and Douglas.

She also admitted that desperation explained only her first decision.

Greed explained the rest.

Her testimony did not erase her choices.

It made them useful to the investigation.

Silas responded publicly.

He announced a press conference accusing Hartwell Global of corruption.

Hours before the event, several reporters received a psychiatric assessment claiming I suffered from paranoid delusions and was mentally unfit to lead a publicly traded company.

Grant had created the original false reports.

Silas had expanded them.

Three board members urged me to step aside.

“The report is false,” I said.

One director shook his head.

“The market may not care whether it is false. Perception can destroy us before the truth catches up.”

I stood at the head of the boardroom table.

“I will not disappear simply because a forged document becomes easier to believe when it is attached to a woman.”

I presented verified medical records proving the assessment was fabricated.

Then I displayed evidence connecting Silas to the attempt to frame Mason.

Finally, I announced Hartwell Global’s new partnership with Apex Surgical Robotics.

The agreement covered the development of automated hospital systems and was worth more than every contract we had lost during Grant’s tenure combined.

The boardroom fell silent.

At ten that morning, Silas began his press conference.

He stood before a wall of cameras and smiled.

“Today, the public will learn how one wealthy family placed itself above accountability.”

Before he could display the forged medical report, the screens behind him changed.

His private messages appeared.

Instructions to frame Mason.

Payments to Nathan Cole.

Communications with Tessa.

Transfers from Summit Ridge Capital.

Our attorneys had obtained an emergency court order allowing investigators to seize records from a server provider used by Crowe Industrial.

One of Silas’s own technology officers had surrendered the backup archives in exchange for immunity.

Reporters began shouting questions.

Silas attempted to leave through a side entrance.

Federal agents arrested him before he reached the door.

For several hours, I believed the worst was finished.

Then every computer inside Hartwell Tower went black.
