Part Six: The Brothers
We arranged a final family meeting at my parents’ lakefront home.
Douglas and Victor arrived believing my father had agreed to transfer his authority.
Instead, federal investigators waited in another room.
My father sat at the end of the dining table.
The same table where all three brothers had celebrated birthdays, graduations and weddings.
I turned on the wall display.
The original trust appeared.
Then the Summit Ridge accounts.
Then Silas’s recorded testimony.
My father looked at his brothers.
“Why?”
Neither answered.
“You sat in this house,” he continued. “You watched our children grow up. You let Camille call you family while you were planning to destroy her.”
Douglas’s face hardened.
“You received everything.”
“I received a job.”
“You received Mother’s respect.”
“So did you.”
“She trusted you.”
“She gave each of us opportunities.”
“You got the company.”
“The board selected me.”
“Because she designed the board to choose you.”
My father’s eyes filled with tears.
“We were brothers.”
Victor laughed bitterly.
“You were the winner. We were the men standing beside you in photographs.”
I stepped between them.
“No one made you losers. You were given divisions, wealth, property and opportunities most people will never receive. You destroyed those opportunities because envy was easier than responsibility.”
Douglas looked at me with open hatred.
“You believe you saved Hartwell?”
“I believe you nearly destroyed it to prove you deserved it.”
Federal agents entered.
Douglas and Victor were arrested for fraud, extortion, money laundering, conspiracy and attempted corporate theft.
My father did not celebrate.
After they were taken away, he remained at the table.
Justice had stopped the conspiracy.
It could not restore the brotherhood that had died years earlier.
