THE NIGHT MY HUSBAND WAS RUSHED TO THE ER WITH MY BROTHER’S WIFE

Part Seven: Grant’s Final Choice

Several days before the arrests, Grant disappeared from his rehabilitation center.

At first, I assumed he had fled.

Then police found his vehicle abandoned near an underground parking garage.

Grant had learned that Douglas’s men were preparing to destroy a backup drive containing the original trust documents and direct payment orders.

He retrieved the drive and mailed it to my office.

Before he could leave, two men attacked him.

He spent more than a day in intensive care.

I stood outside his hospital room looking at the man who had betrayed me in nearly every way possible.

He had lied about our marriage.

He had stolen from my family.

He had watched me endure unnecessary medical treatments.

He had fabricated evidence designed to erase my legal authority.

Then, at the end, he risked his life to preserve the information that helped save Hartwell.

When he regained consciousness, he asked me to come closer.

“I know I can’t undo it,” he whispered.

“No.”

“I helped stop Douglas.”

“Yes.”

“Does that mean anything?”

“It means you finally made one honest decision.”

Tears filled his eyes.

“Can you forgive me?”

“Perhaps one day.”

He waited for more.

“But I will never come back to you.”

His face tightened.

“Even after I tried to fix it?”

“Repairing one piece of the destruction does not erase the choices that caused it.”

“I was trapped.”

“You were threatened after you began cooperating with Silas. You were not trapped when you lied about the procedure. You were not trapped when you watched me blame my body. You were not trapped when you created documents to take my shares.”

Grant closed his eyes.

“I don’t know who I became.”

“I do.”

He looked at me.

“You became someone who valued access to power more than the people who loved you.”

For once, he did not argue.

Our divorce was finalized several months later.

Grant returned the stolen funds, surrendered his Hartwell options and testified against Douglas, Victor and Silas.

After completing rehabilitation, he accepted a junior position at a small architectural firm in another state.

He was no longer a celebrated executive.

Perhaps it was the first position he had ever held without using someone else’s name to obtain it.

Tessa also faced consequences.

Her cooperation reduced the charges, but it did not erase them.

She paid restitution and completed court-ordered service.

Mason remained involved throughout her pregnancy.

When their daughter was born, he was in the delivery room.

He did not promise Tessa that they would become husband and wife again.

“I can care about the mother of my child,” he told me, “without pretending trust has returned.”
