Swollen Legs: When They Could Be a Warning Sign of Liver Disease

Swollen legs are a common complaint, especially after standing for long periods, traveling, or spending hours sitting. In many cases, the swelling is temporary and harmless. However, when it becomes persistent, worsens over time, or is accompanied by other symptoms, it may be a sign of an underlying medical condition—including liver disease. While swollen legs alone do not diagnose liver problems, they should never be ignored if they occur frequently or without an obvious cause.

The liver performs hundreds of essential functions, including producing proteins, processing nutrients, filtering toxins, and regulating fluid balance. When liver disease becomes advanced, such as in cirrhosis, the liver may no longer produce enough albumin, a protein that helps keep fluid inside the blood vessels. Low albumin levels allow fluid to leak into surrounding tissues, leading to swelling, particularly in the feet, ankles, and lower legs.
