Part 2

At 3:06 a.m., Victor called.

I didn’t answer.

At 3:09 a.m., Olivia called.

I smiled, poured his drugged tea down the sink, and watched the first snow of December fall gently outside our window.

By sunrise, Victor would learn three painful truths.

The passport in his pocket wouldn’t take him nearly as far as he hoped. The accounts he thought he controlled had already been frozen. And the “useless woman” he mocked had spent months building a trap he would never escape.

At 7:15 a.m., my phone rang again. This time it was my attorney, Rachel.

“It’s done,” she said. “All assets frozen. Federal agents are waiting at the airport. They’ve already detained him and Olivia for questioning regarding wire fraud and money laundering.”

I made myself a fresh cup of coffee and sat by the window.

Victor had spent years underestimating me — treating me like a background character in his life while he planned his grand escape with my money and my former friend.

At 3:15 a.m., I finally stood up from the bed. The house was completely silent now, the kind of silence that comes after a storm has passed. Victor’s side of the closet was half empty — expensive suits gone, his favorite watches missing, even the custom-made leather shoes I bought him for our 10th anniversary.

He really thought he had won.

I walked downstairs to the kitchen, still wearing my silk robe, and opened my laptop. The screen lit up with the email my lawyer had sent at 11:47 p.m. last night — “All documents received and filed. Accounts frozen at 6:00 a.m. EST. Arrest warrant in process.”

I smiled.

Victor had spent months planning his “perfect escape.” He thought he was clever. He had moved money into offshore accounts, changed the beneficiary on his life insurance, and even convinced Olivia that they would live like royalty in Europe.

What he didn’t know was that I had been three steps ahead of him for half a year.

By 4:00 a.m., my phone started blowing up. First were the missed calls from Victor. Then from Olivia. Then from Victor’s mother, who probably just woke up to a frantic message from her precious son.

I didn’t answer any of them.

Instead, I made myself a fresh cup of coffee and sat by the window, watching the snow fall thicker now. Our beautiful suburban house in Boston looked like a Christmas card. A house I had paid for with my own family money — the one Victor always liked to forget.

At 5:30 a.m., my lawyer called.
