PART 2: I left work early on my son’s first birthday

—Leonard

I read the last sentence three times.

Do not trust the basement wall.

My house did not have a basement.

At least, not one I knew about.

I looked at Amy.

She looked back at me with the same realization spreading across her face.

The pantry floor.

The locked metal hatch Teresa always kept covered with storage bins.

The one she told Amy never to touch because “old houses have dangerous crawlspaces.”

Detective Ramirez’s phone buzzed.

She answered, listened, and her expression changed.

“Connor,” she said slowly, lowering the phone. “Officers just found a hidden access panel beneath your pantry.”

My mouth went dry.

“And?”

She looked at the letter in my hand.

“Behind the wall, there’s a room.”

Amy gripped my fingers.

“What’s inside it?” I asked.

Detective Ramirez did not answer immediately.

When she did, her voice was low.

“A child’s backpack. Old court papers. And a lockbox with your name on it.”

Before I could speak, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I stared at it.

Then I answered.

For several seconds, there was only static and breathing.

Then a man’s voice said, “Connor?”

My blood turned cold.

It was older than memory, rougher than the voice I had carried in my head since childhood.

But I knew it.

“Dad?” I whispered.

On the other end of the line, Leonard Bradley exhaled like he had been waiting twenty years to hear that word.
